Upgrade your CZ Shadow 2 competition special

In the CZ Shadow 2 line, the CZ Shadow 2 and CZ Shadow 2 Orange stand out as firearms designed for dynamic shooting disciplines so you can head straight to matches. They come with fiber optic sights and an adjustable rear sight, great grip ergonomics, and a light match trigger out of the box.

You can rely on the CZ Shadow 2 Target as a dedicated firearm for precision bullseye shooting.

Do you think it cannot get any better? It can. Thanks to a wide selection of original and aftermarket parts, you can customize your firearm exactly to your preferences, even if it is just to make it look great.

The CZ Shadow family

CZ Shadow models

The CZ Shadow 2 models are based on the legendary CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow. As the next generation, they feature a modern frame and slide fully adapted for competition shooting. If you own a CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow, the following information will still be very useful. You will just find all the accessories directly in the CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow accessories category.

Alongside full-size handguns in the CZ Shadow 2 family, you will also find the CZ Shadow 2 Carry and CZ Shadow 2 Compact, which you will appreciate for everyday carry. In this article, we focus primarily on pure competition shooting.

What competitive shooters aim for

Besides the target, accessories let you shoot faster and more accurately. Everyone needs something a bit different. One shooter tweaks the grip, another speeds up reloads, someone else lightens the trigger, and another adds a red dot if their division allows it. Some just want their pistol to have a unique look. What do you need?

Sights – aim fast, shoot accurately

CZ Shadow 2 sights

The CZ Shadow 2 line is very accurate thanks to its extended slide. These models come with a fiber optic front sight and a serrated adjustable rear sight from the factory. This setup is the most popular combination for dynamic disciplines, but different shooters prefer different sights.

Our customers also like fiber optics in the rear sight. They show up well in good light because they gather light to make the dot stand out so your eye finds it quickly. Other shooters prefer plain black sights or want to change the thickness or color of the front sight fiber.

Everyone can find what they need in the sights category.

Red dot or iron sights?

A red dot brings several advantages:

  • it lets you shoot with both eyes open,
  • it lets you focus on the target dot instead of the front sight, which feels more natural for your brain and eye,
  • it helps correct vision issues for some shooters. You cannot use it in every competition. For example, in the IPSC Production division, range officers will move you straight to Production Optics.

Different shooters, different red dots

If you do not carry your firearm concealed, you can mount a red dot with a larger window. Everyone prefers something different.

You can also choose whether you like a single dot with a small red dot in the middle or a circle dot with an outer ring around the dot. Many red dots let you switch between a single dot and a circle dot depending on the situation and your needs.

How to mount a red dot

You have two options to install a red dot:

  1. Using an optics ready plate

You use this on models marked as OR (Optics Ready). These models have a factory slide cut for an optics ready plate where you mount your red dot. It is simple.
The optics ready plate must match your red dot footprint and fit your firearm model, such as CZ Shadow 2 Optics Ready plates. You can verify compatibility on every product page.

  2. Using a red dot mount

A red dot mount solves the problem of mounting a red dot on handguns that are not optics ready. You install the mount in place of the rear sight and then screw your red dot onto it. You lose the rear sight, but you can put it back anytime.

TIP: The red dot mount must also be compatible with your firearm, such as CZ Shadow 2 red dot mounts, and match your red dot footprint. Fortunately, a few common footprints cover most red dots, so selection is straightforward.

Trigger and springs for a light, smooth action

A smooth pull and a short reset are what competitive shooters want, and the CZ Shadow 2 delivers both. Watch out: the factory sets up the firearm for safety so it fires ammo with hard primers used in duty loads rather than soft primers used by sports shooters.

What can you upgrade, and which spring should you get?

Trigger pull

When you pull the trigger the first time in double action (DA) mode, you must beat the heaviest weight. You can lower it by swapping the main spring for a lighter one. I recommend replacing the firing pin spring with a lighter one at the same time to prevent light strikes.

TIP: When you lighten the pull, check your division rules because some set a minimum DA trigger weight limit.

The main spring lightens your trigger pull in single action (SA) mode at the same time.

A clear and crisp trigger

CZ Shadow 2 sear spring and trigger spring

Most shooters try to get a trigger that is light, crisp, and has a clear break. In SA mode, the small sear spring handles this along with the main spring. After many rounds, if the trigger feels mushy, replace this spring. A thicker wire gives you a heavier trigger resistance.

The trigger spring controls trigger return after a shot. If you want a minimal trigger pull, you can swap it for a lighter one. Many shooters keep the factory tension or even install a slightly stronger trigger spring for a snappy reset.

TIP: I recommend keeping a spare trigger spring in your range bag no matter what you choose. It takes heavy stress and breaks more often than other springs.

Muzzle dip

CZ Shadow 2 DPM Recoil system

After a shot when the slide moves forward, some shooters deal with the muzzle dipping down. The recoil spring strength pushes the slide forward. You can swap the recoil spring for a lighter one to reduce this dip.

There is a catch: when the slide moves back, a lighter spring absorbs less shock as the slide hits the frame. Both parts take more wear. I recommend installing a buffer on the guide rod to act as a shock absorber. The DPM Recoil system also handles shock smoothly, keeps the cycle steady, and lowers felt recoil.

TIP: If you do not want to test different spring weights and want to upgrade everything at once, grab a springs kit. You can find all the springs you need for your CZ Shadow 2 in the CZ Shadow 2 springs category.

Faster reloads with a magwell

CZ Shadow 2 Magwells

If your shooting division lets you use a magwell, you should get one. A flared magazine well speeds up your reloads. A brass magwell adds weight to the bottom of the firearm to balance it better. If you like the current balance, you can pick from aluminum magwells in different colors.

WARNING: A magwell means you also need short grips and compatible base pads.

Find grips that fit your hand

You must always use short grips with a magwell, but a magwell is not the only reason to swap grips. Remember that you choose from long grips when you do not use a magwell.

Short and long grips come in brass, aluminum, or polymer, and each material has its benefits.

Improve your grip

CZ Shadow 2 Grips

The manufacturer designed great ergonomics into the firearm, so it fits large hands well. The grip is not too wide, so you can wrap your hand around it easily. If your grip does not feel quite right, swap to thinner or thicker panels based on what fits you.

Some grips come in different thicknesses like small, medium, and large, such as those from Armanov. If you want contoured grips that fill your palm better, look for palm swell options.

Checkering for a solid hold

Aggressive checkering keeps the grip from slipping when your hands get sweaty during match stress. Some shooters dislike rough textures and prefer a smoother feel.

I covered grip selection by texture, size, and material in How to choose the right grips for your CZ.

Upgrading grips also customizes the look of your firearm. Do you want an aggressive custom look or a subtle style? The choice is yours, and you have many options.

Base pads make a big difference

CZ Shadow 2 base pads

You can swap standard factory base pads for extended aluminum or brass base pads. They give you several advantages:

  • heavier base pads help empty magazines drop out faster and more reliably,
  • they protect the magazine body from damage,
  • they can increase magazine capacity. (Check your division rules here.)

Make sure you pick base pads that fit your magwell if you use one.

Thumb rest

A thumb rest helps advanced shooters control muzzle climb and get back on target faster. Some divisions ban thumb rests, so check the rules before you buy one.

To avoid drilling into the frame or making permanent changes to your firearm, you can choose options for your right or left thumb:

Where will you start?

Did you find inspiration to tune your CZ Shadow 2? Where will you start? The trigger, sights, or a new grip color? Remember that everything not banned in your match rules is allowed. Set up your pistol so you work as one smooth unit during your stage. You will see the results on the scoreboard.
